Our Story
The Hub began with an idea, a community and a belief that something special could grow when people come together.
When Jo first became involved with local community groups and conversations, she quickly discovered something that stayed with her the incredible energy, connection and sense of belonging that can be created when people have a place where they feel welcome. It felt like home.
At the time, Jo was living in Nazeing and her dad lived in Stanstead Abbotts. She had always dreamed of having her own pet shop and grooming parlour in the village, allowing her to build a small business while being closer to her dad and becoming more involved in the local community.
Then she discovered the building that would eventually become The Hub.
It was far larger than anything she needed for a pet shop. Yet, instead of seeing the extra space as a problem, Jo began to see its potential.
She started asking the people around her:
“What if this space could become something for the whole community?”
The answer was a resounding yes.
And so the journey began.
From an Empty Building to a Place with Heart
The building was in a very poor condition when Jo first took it on. It took around four months of hard work, determination, cleaning, decorating and renovating to transform it into somewhere people could walk through the door and feel comfortable.
Friends, family and volunteers all played their part, little by little the building changed but more importantly, the atmosphere changed.
What had once been an empty and neglected space began to feel warm, welcoming and alive. People started coming through the doors. Conversations began. Ideas were shared. Connections were made.
The landlord would often ask Jo: “What are you doing with the space?” her answer was simple: “It’s going to find its own way for the community.” And that is exactly what began to happen.
The pet shop eventually didn’t work as a business, but by then something much bigger had started to emerge. The Hub was becoming a place where people could come together, and Jo realised that perhaps the pet shop had never been the true purpose of the building.
The space had a bigger story to tell.
Why The Hub Exists
The Hub exists because community matters.
We believe everyone should have somewhere they can feel welcome, safe, valued and connected.
Life can be difficult for many different reasons. People can experience loneliness, isolation, financial pressure, changes in circumstances, lack of confidence or simply feel that they don't have somewhere they belong.
Sometimes what makes the biggest difference is having a place where someone knows your name.
A place where you can have a conversation
A place where you can learn something new
A place where you can meet people
A place where you can ask for help without feeling judged
That is what we want The Hub to be.
Our community
The Hub is not simply a building or a collection of rooms The Hub is its people.
It is created by the volunteers who give their time, the organisations and community groups who work alongside us, the people who come through our doors and everyone who contributes an idea, a skill, a conversation or a helping hand.
We want to create opportunities for people to connect, participate and contribute whatever their age, background or circumstances.
We believe that everyone has something to offer
Sometimes people simply need the right environment and the right encouragement to discover it.
What We Want to Create
Our ambition is to continue developing The Hub into a thriving community space that responds to the needs of local people.
We want to create opportunities for:
Connection — bringing people together and reducing isolation.
Support — creating a welcoming environment where people can access help, information and signposting.
Learning — encouraging people to develop skills, knowledge and confidence.
Participation — giving local people opportunities to get involved and have their voices heard.
Wellbeing — supporting positive social connections and creating spaces where people can feel comfortable and valued.
Community enterprise — providing opportunities for local ideas, projects and initiatives to grow.
Volunteering — enabling people to contribute their time, skills and experience while building confidence and connections.
We don't believe there is a single solution to building a stronger community.
Instead, we believe in creating the space for people, ideas and opportunities to come together.
Our CIC
As a Community Interest Company, The Hub exists to create lasting social value for the community.
Our focus is not simply on what happens inside the building today, but on what we can build together for the future.
We want to listen to our community, understand what people need and work collaboratively to develop activities, services, partnerships and opportunities that make a genuine difference.
We are passionate about collaboration rather than working in isolation.
Because when community organisations, volunteers, local people and partners come together, we can achieve far more than any of us can achieve alone.
Together we get to create a community where people feel connected, supported, valued and able to participate.
We want The Hub to be somewhere people can walk into for the first time and feel that they belong.
Somewhere if you feel isolated you can find connection.
Somewhere an idea can become a project.
Somewhere a volunteer can discover a new purpose.
Somewhere people can learn, share, support one another and build friendships.
And somewhere the community itself can help shape what comes next.
The Journey Continues
We don't pretend to know exactly what The Hub will become.
And perhaps that's the most exciting part.
From the very beginning, we have allowed the community to help shape its direction. We continue to listen, learn, adapt and grow.
What started with one person seeing potential in an empty space has become a shared vision powered by volunteers, community members and people who believe that something good can happen when we make room for people to come
together.
The Hub has already come a long way but we believe this is only the beginning.
A building can provide the space people create the community.
Together, we create The Hub.
